Starting something new at 85 years old may not feel easy. But sometimes, an unexpected challenge can lead us in a completely new direction.
One of our members began meditation at Long Island Meditation in mid-June 2025 after experiencing mental lapses. His doctor recommended trying meditation for about eight weeks, and by coincidence, Long Island Meditation was located just across the street from his office.
Although he initially felt reluctant to begin something new at his age, he decided to give meditation a try.
Beginning With a Simple Goal
When he first came to Long Island Meditation, his goal was simple: he wanted a clearer mind.
He began learning the meditation method with Cindy and found that the practice itself was simple and easy to follow. Rather than trying to control or suppress his thoughts, he learned how to let go of the thoughts and memories that had accumulated in his mind.
He described it as a way of clearing a mind that had become “clogged” with so many thoughts.
After approximately eight weeks of meditation, he felt encouraged by the changes he was experiencing and decided that eight weeks was only the beginning.
Discovering There Was More to Learn
What started as a short-term commitment gradually became something much more meaningful.
As he continued meditating, he began to recognize how many thoughts, memories, and habits had been stored in his mind throughout his life—and how much they had influenced the way he experienced the world.
He decided to continue the meditation program, not simply to feel better, but to understand his mind more deeply and continue letting go of what he no longer needed.
In his own words:
“I am surprised that my entire being is in the process of changing for the better. As a result, I am enthusiastic about developing a brain that is clear of so many useless thoughts.”
It’s Never Too Late to Begin
His experience is a beautiful reminder that there is no age limit for learning about yourself or beginning something new.
At 85, he started meditation with some hesitation and a simple hope for a clearer mind. What he discovered was a journey that he wanted to continue.
Today, he continues his meditation practice with enthusiasm and gratitude.
“I am very grateful for the method, Cindy, and my changes!”
Sometimes, eight weeks can simply be the beginning.
